nietzsche and donkey

Adventavit Asinus, Pulcher et Fortissimus

(The Ass Arrives, Beautiful And Most Brave)

Everyone should have a latin motto, and that’s mine.  It’s from the most over-quoted and under-read philosopher of the 19th century, Freidrich Nietzsche Its meaning isn’t immediately obvious, so here’s a clue. It comes right after this line:

There is a point in every philosophy at which the “conviction” of the philosopher appears on the scene[.]

So the donkey is this ‘conviction’.  Nietzsche’ is saying all who philosophize eventually wind up revealing their comically unphilosophical self-delusion, its embarrassing history, and the farcical underpinning of all their work.

My obsessions, neuroses, potty-training, and everything else will inevitably take their place on the stage of my writings whether I wish them to or not.  This makes me precisely just like every other thinker in the world.

So, why say it?

I named this blog Situated Geekery for a reason.

You may have come here looking for my geek material, like the Double Dawg Dare.  Or you may have come to read my coaching articles.  (Or, you may have come because I keep forcing you: Hi Virginia! Hi Helen!Whichever keeps you coming, don’t fret, I’ll keep both sets coming, because both topics groove me. (And I’m not likely to stop making my wife and my best friend come here either.)

But I want to add a new set to the list.

‘Situated’  articles are about the ideas that underpin my philosophy of situated geekery.  These are the notions, values, principles, or proverbs that underlie both my hardcore technical work and my — no, very much not softcore — equally hardcore coaching work.  ’Situated’ articles should matter to you no matter what brought you in, as they’re exploring the ideas I use to decide what to do in both domains.

Situated geekery is about connecting our geek lives to all the contexts in which we operate.  What does that mean, in closer detail?

What’s Situated Geekery About?

Watch It Arrive, Beautiful and Most Brave!
